Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
