Increased Waist-Stature Proportion Elevates Cardiovascular Risk

Scientists monitored nearly three thousand individuals in São Paulo, Brazil to examine how body measurements forecasted cardiac health outcomes in contrast with Body Mass Index.

Research volunteers were about 48 years old on average, and the majority were female participants. The sample was racially diverse, but mainly Caucasian (57%), and included participants of diverse heritage, Black heritage, and Eastern origins.

To be included in the investigation, participants had to have no arterial calcium deposits accumulation, as confirmed by a cardiovascular examination. Coronary artery calcium represents a risk indicator for heart disease, with elevated scores suggesting a worse health status.

After a five-year follow-up, the team re-evaluated arterial deposits. About one in seven of participants exhibited signs of arterial deposits, and it was found to be more common among those with bigger waistlines.

While each measurement — weight-height ratio, waist circumference, and WHtR — were connected with heart disease risk in an initial evaluation, exclusively the waist-stature measurement continued as a standalone indicator after factoring in conventional risk elements, such as elevated blood pressure, high lipid counts, and diabetes.
